The Surprising History of Balloons in Celebrations
The first rubber balloons were invented in 1824 by British scientist Michael Faraday, who used them for his hydrogen experiments. However, it wasn’t until the 1930s that latex balloons became popular for parties.
In 1939, the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York introduced giant helium balloons, forever changing how we celebrate. Interestingly, the first balloon animal was created by a magician in the early 1900s, and balloon twisting quickly became an art form.
Across many cultures, releasing balloons during ceremonies symbolizes letting go of worries or sending wishes to the sky. Balloons have turned ordinary moments into magical memories for nearly a century.
