The Rich and Delicious History of Chocolate

Chocolate has a royal past. The ancient Maya and Aztecs of Central America considered cacao beans more valuable than gold. They drank it as a bitter, spicy beverage during ceremonies and called it “xocolātl,” meaning “bitter water.”

When Spanish explorers brought chocolate to Europe in the 1500s, it was reserved only for kings and the wealthy. It wasn’t until the 1800s that chocolate became affordable and sweet, thanks to the invention of the chocolate press by Coenraad van Houten.

Today, chocolate is one of the world’s most loved treats, often given to express love, appreciation, or friendship. A single box of fine chocolate can carry centuries of history in every bite.
