The Fascinating History of Flowers as Gifts

Flowers have been used as gifts for over 5,000 years. The ancient Egyptians offered flowers to their gods and used them in burial rituals to honor the dead. In the Victorian era (1830s–1900s), people developed “floriography” — a secret language of flowers where each bloom carried a specific meaning. Red roses symbolized passionate love, while white lilies represented purity.

During World War II, soldiers often sent flowers to their loved ones back home as a symbol of hope and remembrance. Today, gifting flowers remains one of the most universal ways to express emotions across cultures.

Whether it’s joy, love, sympathy, or celebration, flowers continue to tell stories that words sometimes cannot.
